DECLINE OF OPPOSITION - DANGER FOR DEMOCRACY

Opposition - Highway Sign image

"The quality of your win is judged by the strength of your enemy".This rightly  applies to Narendra Modi.He has won two consecutive elections with an increasing majority.Does it indicate that his administration is flaw less?.Not really. His performance surely doesn't resonate with his electoral majority. There are many reasons for his electoral victory despite his poor performance but the most significant one is the TINA FACTOR

TINA FACTOR-THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE

"If not Modi then Who?".This was the mind blogging question posed by the BJP during its campaign. In fact this is truly valid. The principal opposition party the Indian National congress has seen a steep decline after 2014 significantly after 2019.There was a large void of leadership in the opposition which could fight the might of Narendra Modi. This not only suppresses peoples voice but is very dangerous to the democratic idea of a nation.

WHY HAS OPPOSITION DECLINED?

Results 2019 in charts and maps: BJP started poorly, Congress ...

On the national stage Congress is the main contender to pose a challenge to BJP. But after 2014 congress has proved her inability to tackle the might of Narendra modi. This was seen in many scenarios of state election. There would be a wave of congress and Modi comes and does his election campaign and thus the result is overturned.Congress had lost many of its leaders like Scindia to the BJP. Its obsession to the Gandhi family has also damaged it to a very large extent which is now visible in Rajasthan.

At the state level the regional parties seemed to provide an alternative. But during the national election the regional interests were overshadowed by the national agenda of BJP i.e hindutva and nationalism.

WHY IS DEMOCRACY IN DANGER?

Democracy turns into a Dictatorship when there is no strong voice of the opposition. BJP under the Modi-Shah duopoly is a robust election machine which has a large communal project in waiting. This is visible in the decisions like CAA-NRC. The wrongdoings in the administration like Demonetisation, GST and foreign policy turned out to be Himalayan blunders.Yet all these weren't an issue in the election since there was no strong voice to take this agenda to the people.

Its attack on constitutional institutions led to a nexus between the party and independent institutions like RBI, Election Commisision. If Modi manages to win  two more consecutive terms which is seemingly possible with the current state of opposition constitution will surely be  forgotten.Unless you question and present a voice of the people through opposition it is impossible to prevent this catastrophe.

WAY FORWARD - MYOPINION

I Personally feel that the Nation needs a centrist ideology right now.India is pivoting Right under this regime. This is clearly visible when people vote on the agenda of Ram Mandir but not the issue of unemployment.India according to me should be a liberal, federal, democratic,Gandhian, secular country.
This is what our freedom fighters wanted. This can happen only when there is a strong opposition.

Congress should surely play the role of a responsible opposition by promoting its ideology of Gandhism and The idea of India. This can happen only when there are structural reforms in the way the party is working right now.
