POOR IN SMART CITIES -INDIAN SCENARIO
Smart cities is a concept that has fascinated many countries including India. In fact India has aimed at building 100 smart cities. These facts might be interesting but we need to take into account the practicality of the situation in a developing country like India.
Let us consider a like Mumbai you get to see large Skyscapers on one side and also you get to see poor spending their lives in the slums.Slums in large cities may be formed due to many factors like urbanization, lack of affordable housing etc. So when we aim at turning a city of such demography into a smart city it would be practically not possible.Consider some more examples like Kolkata,Hyderabad where people from below poverty line are present over a significant percentage.
Hence poverty in cities stands as a major obstruction for turning a city into smart city.
Three major problems which i found would turn into obstacles for building of smart cities are listed below
Unplanned Urbanization
Urbanization has led to increase in populations of cities over many years, due to this poor are unable to find a shelter in the city and thus kacha houses(slums) are indeed a solution for them. This could be avoided by making these immigrants part of Urban planning. It is proven from some studies in African cities that when poor are given a choice it was more sustainable.Hence for a city to be smarter these people should be provided with good housing.
Unemployment
The current problem that is haunting India is Unemployment. For a smart city to have unemployed people it is indeed an unacceptable thing.Crime rates in the Newyork city have increased due to unemployment because people tend to commit crime if they are unemployed.(this applies only to umemployted poor).Hence these unemployed people should be provided a concrete job in a smart city. This could be done by forming a complaint cell to which people can complain of any failure in the city related to the technology. These unemployed people who are mostly uneducated could be made part of this cell and they would connect the customers to the concerned authorities. This complaint cell would be turned as a troubleshooting center in the future.
Resistance to change
Making a city smarter is a major change that would happen to it. So the question that arises is "are people ready for this big change?".To be honest the answer is No. I believe that there should be a change in mindset among people.there should be an acceptance for new technologies.Making an impact with ideas is only half a job done the other half lies in bringing an acceptance of these tech olgies from people especially from poor.
