UNSUNG CORONA WARRIOR -DATA SCIENTIST -SOME ISSUES


Ever since the corona pandemic broke out doctors and front line workers were on their marks to tackle this effectively in all the ways they could.But it is not so obvious that data scientists have a very significant role to play in formulating a Covid strategy.Many data analytic firms and universities like John hopkins university are rigorously analyzing data and help the bureaucrats in formulating  data driven policies.However I have some concerns on how data is being used for Covid response.

In this article I would like to present you the main traits of data that is needed for an efficient Covid response.

DATA VERSATILITY

Data should be versatile.It means that it must be of different forms.It must be in a position to give you insights on what is happening at an area.For example if you have only the data on no of positive cases in an area without any data on the Positivity rate there is a chance of  misinterpretation that the area is safe.

Karnataka is a state which performed well to a larger extent.If you see the figure below it published openly all the different types of data to the public.Hence both the public and the Administartions had a clear understanding on where should the Lockdown be lifted or continued.

 

Take states like Maharashtra where the corona cases are rising but it is not a matter of great concern because of the given demography and the Positivity rate.Hence having different types of data  only helps you forming an efficient strategy but also gives you a sense of confidence.

DATA TRANSPARENCY


Data transparency simply can be  explained as telling the people the data you have collected.Public cooperation is useful for efficient control of this pandemic.It is the public which ultimately should take precautions.Unless you know the severity of the pandemic in a particular area you wont be tempted to take necessary precautions and thus avoiding a contact.As mentioned above people must have access to different kinds of data inorder for them to have an analysis of their own.



Coming to the doctors perspective they need to know different kinds of analytics in order for them to treat patients.They need to keep track of medicines and the required utilities that are useful for a patient.If the doctors are not provided with good amount of data it is impossible for them have an efficient strategy for tackling the pandemic.

States like Andhrapradesh,Maharashtra,Karnataka have been transparent and thus giving public a clear picture.The below picture shows that Delhi has overtaken Mumbai in the corona cases.It is only because Delhi wasn't as transparent as Mumbai.Hence it led to a logical fallacy that things were ok.

As a person interested in data science, I would like to take a moment to appreciate all the data analysts out there for their rigorous Hardwork in formulating different types of models and giving us insights on how the pandemic is impacting the future.But data should be widely published and carefully looked at for efficient Covid strategies.
